Professor Martin Mortimer

N8 AgriFood Sustainable Food Production Theme Lead The University of Liverpool

As a plant population biologist, Martin studies the development and application of agro-ecology in tropical and temperate agro-ecosystems. Topics include: the mechanisms that, at population and community level, regulate species abundance in rice and wheat agro-ecosystems; assessment of the potential scale and impact of transgene outcrossing between feral and crop species; trait analysis of competitiveness in plants; and mathematical modeling of species interactions in plant and microbial systems. This research underpins the design of integrated weed management systems that optimises reliance on chemical interventions and maximises intrinsic regulatory processes within ecosystems.
