Both Leeds and Newcastle Universities are part of the Centre for Innovation and Excellence in Livestock (CIEL). This is a UK-wide collaboration between 12 research institutes, including Rothamsted Research, Universities of Nottingham, Bristol and Aberystwyth, and leading business partners. By linking world-class livestock research bodies with industry partners, the programme aims to enhance livestock production and quality across the supply chain.

Each of the 12 research organisations leads on one aspect of livestock or related food research – Leeds is the lead organisation for pig research, Newcastle leads on novel technology and digital innovation. There are currently over 20 business and industrial partners, including AB Agri, AHDB, Tesco, For Farmers ltd, The Co-Operative Group, and Devenish Nutrition.
