N8 Research Partnership
About the N8
The N8 Research Partnership is a collaboration of the eight most research intensive Universities in the North of England: Durham, Lancaster, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle, Sheffield and York.
Working with other universities, industry and society, N8 aims to maximise the impact of this research base by:
- promoting collaboration
- establishing innovative research capabilities & programmes of national and international prominence
- driving economic growth
The N8 Research Partnership is a unique regional network of world class universities, who while pursuing their own research expert areas, come together to combine their strengths in a long-term partnership.
The N8 Board consists of the Vice-Chancellors of the eight universities, with an Executive Management Group of Pro-Vice-Chancellors responsible for operational direction of the collaboration.
The N8 Research Partnership’s main research areas have been chosen based on existing research strengths in the N8 universities and the potential for growth and economic impact.
The N8 Research has two main Research Themes: AgriFood and Urban and Community Transformation.
These N8 Research Themes are expected to develop over a 3-5 year period to provide a platform of international and world-class research, incorporating multiple collaborative activities (including doctoral training where appropriate) and engagement with industry regionally, nationally and internationally.
In addition, N8 Research Partnership recognises three areas as Emerging Communities; Robotics and Autonomous Systems, Targets for New Medicines, and Bioeconomy.
Emerging Communities are areas that have the potential, through the development of a research community and knowledge exchange, to grow into a future Research Theme.
